I'm unaware of the elections not meeting international criteria but are these the same international criteria which allowed the Iraqis to live in misery for so long under the threat of torture and death without lifting a finger to help them? If so then I would suggest that the international criteria in question were not valid themselves.
Perhaps you should email your freinds and explain that as soldiers they have to expect that they might die and if they don't like it they should not have signed up in the first place.
