from a network engineer.
1 shutdown everything (cable modem, router if you have one, and computer)
2 wait 30 seconds
3 turn on cable modem
4 turn on router
5 turn on computer

if no router ignore the router
in computer open run command
type cmd
enter ipconfig
if you see an ip address with 169 in it your address is not workin
169.254.x.x actually
if you have a router you should see an address like this
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

if you don't have a router you should see a cox ip
