Page Rank: Ynot vs. GFY (SE experts please advise)

I've been doing some research and I thought I was just about to understand some of the basics of PR. I'm learning about internal linking structures as well as hardlink outbound exchanges and how they work together to increase or decrease PR.

I have a PR 4 site, (it's a BBS) It only 4 or 5 outbound links that I added, including a few outbound sponsor links. (again) It's a PR 4 and only has 5 outbound links, and as far as I know it doesn't have any inbound hardlinks. It's just been sitting there for years, and it's a PR of 4.

I can understand how I got a PR 4 because of the stuff I've been reading about internal linking structures. So I decided to see if I was understanding it by going to other porn sites and seeing if the PR was about what I figured it would be based on my research. I went to AVNonline, PR4, which is what I expected. GFY, PR5, a little more than I expected. I hit a few more sites with the same expectations. Jay's XXX links, PR5. Then I went to Ynot....

GFY is a PR 5 site. It's very active and has many.. many inbound and outbound links.

Ynot has been around longer, has tons and tons of internal links as well as many.. MANY outbound and is a PR of ZERO.

What gives? How could a site as big as Ynot, have a PR of 0?? This goes against what I've learned so far. In fact it's almost like they had to specifically ask google for a PR of 0. I mean, just by default they should have a PR of 2, and that's at the VERY LEAST.

How is that possible? (How do I avoid that?) What am I not understanding?
