I guess it's just a war name, you don't hear people calling Germans "Krauts" in regular conversation these days.
It's going to be hard for this pope to shake off even a remote affiliaton with the Hitler youth. I'm sure the cardinals who elected him know what they're doing though. He's their choice and that's that.
Btw, us Canadians like sauerkraut too. :D
