Don't beat yourself up about it. At least your conscientious enough to take pause and wanna vent.
Unfortunately, the "times" are such that the words "militants" and "hostage" are so much more often in the news that we don't really see (much less FEEL) them anymore. We're trained to believe that something like that is ALWAYS happening SOMEWHERE, so the particulars, the body count, the details of needless savagery don't penetrate.
Resist that.
Meanwhile, the sky may actually BE falling.
