Serious Topic: What's with the overflow of .MOV video on the net now?

I have noticed in recent months an increase in 'quicktime option only' video on the internet, especially on humor , blog sites, etc.
Unless you're buying expensive codecs for super high qality video, .mov is inferior web video compared to wmv.
People don't like to install Quicktime (and less people have QT than WMP), it doesnt stream (and people have lots of problems with it prog-dloading), and the compression is not as good as wmv.
So what gives? Especially when you have it embedded in a webpage,, using something like QT alternative will not display it unless you view source and find the actual video URL.
I am wondering why it is becoming so popular. Any ideas?
