I lived in Tel Aviv for 10 years and had a great time. Mostly when I was there, reading reports from foreign newspapers was like reading about another country and everyday life was very relaxed.
There are things that take a while to get used to. The most obvious one is the constant presence of people in military uniforms and carrying guns. So many people do army service and are always travelling to or from their bases, often hitch-hiking or going by bus. In east Jerusalem and places like the bus station in Tel Aviv, some are actually patrolling.
Of course there are incidents and they shake the country if they are serious. But much like London when the IRA bombings were going on regularly, people have the ability to get back to "business as usual" almost immediately. If you are tempted to visit, I certainly wouldn't let the security situation put you off.
