This August will be 4 years for me.

I used the nicotine gum for slightly over three months. I don't think I could have done it w/out the gum. I was a heavy smoker who had smoked for many years.
Something that helped me was simply deep breaths and really being aware of the breathing. To feel it inside you. When I'd do that, it would help take my mind off the immediacy of the craving by focusing on something else, and I would realize how much clearer my lungs were than they had been. How much deeper I could breathe.
Which was help in and of itself.
