I always try to break things down as much as possible and see the final point... the last action.

In route of saying that he'd like to settle for $2k, and "make up" at the next conf, he also made reference to what he "could possibly do" instead, not that he necessarily wanted to do it, but it was an option he wasn't going to go with, in order to give you $2k and call things even.

I don't know much about Rick, but I was able to gather that much from the ICQ convo you posted.

If I were you I would have taken the $2k, and kept Rick as a good business contact for future work (not just from him, but his connections). I think there was more than $10k on the line here.

I don't know the other side of it to be honest. But, I do admire AlienQ's commitment to a personal moral ethic. Not everyone in this world is motivated by money... and wrong or not (im in no position to say), you've gotta respect that.
