It's the least tourist cities on the Med coast, but it's very much full of life. The 'quartiers' around the old port are the poorest in Marseille, but the people there are fantastic and the markets are simply great (the smells from the various meats, spices, herbs change at every street corner).
One word of warning though, being not very touristic, there are very very few people that speak English. However, if you make even the slightest effort, the people are extremely sympathetic to foreigners attempting to converse and will absolutely never turn their back on you. That said, if you want to kick back your heels and speak English, head down the coast road from the old port (vieux port) to "vielle Chapelle" and you'll find a fantastic English pub called, what else, the Red Lion. Have a pint and watch the sun set over the Med. Fantastic.
Oh yeah, public transport is shite
