I would of thought it was for land and resources with Religion only used to justify taking it by force.
Example: Caveman wants other Caveman's land, woman, gold. So he says if it rains this winter the Spirits agree with me.
Example: Sacking of Constantinople would of been proof that they(Crusaders) weren't there soley for religion.
