Police Chief hits pedestrian while driving drunk
Quote:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Syracuse Police Chief Steven Thompson resigned Monday, less than 24 hours after striking a pedestrian with his car and being arrested for drunken driving.
Mayor Matt Driscoll immediately appointed First Deputy Chief Gary Miguel to head the nearly 500-person police force.
?It?s not a joyous occasion by any stretch,? said Miguel, who appeared at a midmorning news conference with Driscoll.
State police arrested Thompson at about 8 p.m. Sunday in the neighboring Town of Geddes and charged him with driving while intoxicated. Thompson was arraigned overnight in Geddes town court and released on his own recognizance.
The pedestrian suffered only a minor injury and was treated at the scene, troopers said. Neither Thompson nor a person riding in his city-registered car were injured.
Thompson has been with the Syracuse Police Department since 1972. After serving three years as First Deputy Chief, Thompson was promoted to the top police post last August to replace former Police Chief Dennis DuVal.
Thompson will be back in court April 4.
