I think I see a trend here. As the show floors become less and less important, people are playing the "hang around near the show" game. In vegas I saw tons of people who didn't have badges who were hanging out in the hallway leading to the show, hanging in the center bar, and haning out at "friend's" parties... often because someone got them passes when they were on the floor.
You can have one badge, get tickets to all the parties for your whole crew, and never have to pay... save $750 for strippers and beer.
Moving to secure the ENTIRE hotel is a very smart move from the show people, who will assure that everyone is there on an equal footing and insure value for sponsors, events, and exhibitors alike.
It sucks - but you can blame the leeches for what is happening at these shows. Whole hotel take overs are the way to do it.
