Uhm... Dude, technically, they were Canadians, because it was Upper and Lower Canada. The Quebecers were the "Canadiens" (hence the name "Canada").
They were British before they arrived in Canada, at which Upper and Lower Canada started forming. During the war of 1812, Lower Canada was a colony, thus making its inhabitants official Canadian citizens.
The United States eventually pulled out, because their armies were decimated, and they didn't have enough soldiers left to fight.
Canadians burned the whitehouse, by the time the war of 1812 rolled around, the second generation was in, many of the soldiers had been born in Canada, and were by all means, true Canadians.
