From the article I briefly skimmed yesterday I was led to believe that it was the woman's parents and brother who contacted certain polititians and beseeched them to intervene. The husband, after 16 years of having his wife lying there in a vegetative state, had the "plug-pulling" all but a done deal. It is his wife's family who is fighting him tooth and nail to keep her alive, and are the reason why the government is involved now.
As a health care worker for over 14 years myself, I had occasion to look after many such patients. I would say that generally (not always), after so many years of a person's quality of life being so minimal, there should come a time when it is time to let go and say goodbye and shut down the life support. We never starved anyone to death, but ceasing any sort of aggressive life support is often warranted in these cases.
