My advice.....
If your budget is $1,500 for the setup.....Go with the Nikon D70 and put as much money into a decent lens as you can. If $1,500 is your budget for the body alone then the 20D is the answer but keep in mind that you will be need to spend another chunk for a decent lens. No sense on having a great camera with shitty glass.
One thing to consider......I shoot a lot of my pics in "portrait" mode. The 20D has an optional batter grip that also adds a shutter release button that is handy for shooting "portrait." The Nikon D70 does not offer such an upgrade...This also limits your batter life.

I'm doing okay with the d70 and the kit lens. see above pic. BTW the camera is only a tool as we all know. it's the tool user that makes trhe difference
