As an amateur photographer (I have no formal training), I read this thread with some interest. My five plus years in the adult industry have been an ongoing learning experience.
I'm certainly better as a photographer than I was five years ago, but still have a long way to go to become the photographer that I aspire to be. I even plan to eventually take some lessons.
So anyway, I decided to take a look at your work Xenigo, since you brought this subject up with some rather critical analysis of many who take a different approach to photography than yourself.
I'm not gay, so I'm not really into your niche, but I must acknowledge that your lighting is indeed good. Clean photos too. Overall though, the photos of Dylan that you have displayed on your sparse studiocontent.com site are pretty boring and look way overproduced to me - individual photos might be fine for an ad, but as photo sets, everything looks pretty contrived and obviously shot in a studio.
I guess that's the point that some folks were trying to make, that there is a wide variety of tastes out there, and photography as an art, is inherently subjective.
In the end, if the photographer is into art for art's sake, then they need only please themselves, however if they are instead seeking commercial success, then it's up to the market to determine if they are a success or not.
I find myself sitting in the middle of that artistic versus commercial fence - I want to become a better photographer artistically, while being able to continue being a commercial success.
I spent over $70,000 last year just on hiring talent (models/performers). Fortunately, enough people buy memberships in my sites that it is profitable for me. Their support has bought me better equipment (cameras and lights), and the ability to gain experience.
Training is good, but there are many ways to acquire it, and evolve as an artist.
You're a good photographer Noah, just don't make the mistake of assuming that everyone who follows a different path than you chose to follow is a moron, otherwise you are living in a fool's paradise.
