My brother had his done when he was 13 he's 28 now and has not had a problem since.
My father had his removed from the same doctor just a few months ago and he's never felt better.
The doctor not only removes them at the root but he puts a chemical solution he created in there that for some reason just stops it from ever growing back.

That's what the cotton tipped applicator is suposed to do. There is acid on it, and it's supposed to kill the root of the nail. However, the pus is so strong, that it sometimes neutralizes the acid.
However, if it's something that your doc concocted I'd try it. If it were a guarantee. Usually the acid kills it. And on all his other paitents (including my father, and a few uncles) it has killed the root. My pus must be strong or something.
