They used to do that in medieval England, too, as a punishment for those who wouldn't plead guilty or not guilty. If you were found guilty of an offence, as you usually were, you would hang, and all your posessions would be taken by the government - leaving your family penniless. So many people, often innocent, would refuse to plead, and effectively chose to be crushed to death. Not nice for them, but their families kept their home.
