Classic meditation, as in meditation for enlightenment, won't relax you that much, or relieve stress. It may add to your stress by making you look at yourself and life more closely.
But there are breathing and relaxation exercises that are similar to some types of meditation that will releive stress.
Just slowing down your breathing, and breathing in slow deep breaths for 5 or 10 minutes, can calm you down quite a bit.
