Thanks, Sarah. We both had the same thoughts but were convinced otherwise by our doctor. It really is necessary in our case. There is a little more to the story in our decision to go with a slightly early delivery than I originally stated. When we we went in for the baby turning procedure (ECV) last week, we found that my wife's amniotic fluid was a little on the low side. This is probably the reason she didn't turn. Last Friday the fluid showed signs of decreasing more (but this could have been ultrasound error). This means there is little chance the baby could now turn. Low fluid + breech could lead to some nasty complications if you wait for labor - placental failure, uteran rupture, emergency c-sections. Since there's a very slim chance she will turn, it's too risky to wait and then probably end up with a c-section anyway if a complication sets in. Fortunately, the baby is already a great weight and fully developed - and that was also a factor in our decision. This way, we can safely plan the whole process.
I've talked with some RNs in other states, and they agree 100% with the doctor. Waiting full term under these circumstances is not the right thing to do. 10 days is no big deal if the baby is well developed. Everyone thought my wife would be early anyway because the baby developed a bit ahead of schedule (which could mean the due date was wrong all along).
