Just doesnt make sense to me throwing good money away after something that realistically, isnt going to benefit you as much as your brand name already does

You don't get it: Playboy has a ton of web "properties", niche sites, etc. Just holding onto the top spot for "Playboy" isn't going to bring anywhere near as much traffic -> sales as optimizing for all the terms for their various sites.

I'm sure this will be a very big job for the one they hire, with a LOT of work on researching keywords and then targeting them.
