Granted these sites are doing this with their own exclusive content, so that has a lot to do with the retention. However, some of these sites have zero feeds, only their own content which a broadband user could download during the trial period easily, but they retain month after month.
Feeds are great, but to really know what your members are getting you need to demo them yourself on a dial up connection. Alot of users want downloadable content simply because it takes them 30 minutes to download a 5 minute clip, and if they have some favorites they don't want to wait 30 minutes every time they want to see it.

You gotta look at it from a punters point of view. Many/most are still on 56k and 56k feeds are shit with no real exceptions. Sure there are standards that'll give a poor quality streaming pic on 56k but even these need a good connection which many ISP's have trouble providing 24 hours. Downloadable feeds mean they can often get good quality porno vids on their PC's and actually get off watching them - something hard to do on streaming. If they REALLY want porn they'll stay as long as the site updates regularly.
Most pervs don't wanna keep watching the same stuff and will stay to keep downloading the updates - cheaper than keep buying trials for most sites. It goes back to the point of having good and pref unique content with regular updates.
You also get a lot of crap keep apearing on boards about why would anyone buy when there's so much free stuff? The fact is and will remain that a GOOD paysite will always be able to offer much that you either can't get for free or is extremely difficult at best to get for free. They'll pay and continue to pay if you give them what they want.
