Ping times are related to where you are in relation to the server.
Ignore ping times because most hosts filter or de-prioritize them at
the router level.
We treat ping traffic as un-important, and thus our router rate-shapes pings
and drops them intentionally. The reason for this is mainly because alot of
script kiddies like to do ping flooding and broadcast ping flooding/ala Smurf attacks
on servers, which causes major problems when pings are not controlled.
It would be best for you to worry about last hop packet loss and general connectivity
rather than a ping time. Utilities like MTR in linux are good to trace the route and monitor packet loss on all hops.
