And that's totally the way to go.

When you're a superstar, you want to use your pull to startup ventures and companies. You don't want to fight with your parent lable over record sale percentages- that's biting the hand that feeds you. The best bet for any artist it to give up the sales. Give it up. They'll push your stuff more if they have a higher stake in profits.

Artists don't realise this, because they're stubborn. They want to control every aspect of their music. Which is the main reason why Mettalica owns their own little lable. The record companies don't want anything to do with them, because they want to much money! They HAD to start a lable!

At the beggining of each quarter, the executives of the record company meets with the producers to decide the game plan. They pull out their calculators and decide who has the best conversion ratios- and they push the albums that will make the lable the most- which is the artist who makes the least.

And in regards to Vanity Lables/Imprints... They're the new "TGP's" of the music industry.
