I guess we would have to look back 30 years to find the presidental election when democrats recieved the majority of the American Votes.

If you look only for an election with two candidates , a repub and a dem, then you have to go all the way back to 2000 where Gore actually got more votes then bush did but didn't win the electoral college. The time before that was in 76 when carter got more votes than ford.
