Well, I've been playing with blogs and such for quite a while. It seems like I'm always trying to find time to stop playing and get serious. I set up MovableType on a windows server once - that was fun.. it wasn't supposed to be possible at that time. It used forked processes and unix-style permissions.. That got me started in "real" CSS, and adding functions and hacks got me looking into portals.
About the time I get my brain trained for portals, something new with a completely different concept will come out..
I'm really happy there are soo many good tools out there now. With a handfull of different blog packages, a good portal CMS, some kind of photogallery package and some search/indexing utils, you can do almost anything in a matter of days, as opposed to builidng it from scratch for 6 - 8 months.. 90% of it is open source, as well
Check out xoops and mambo - people are cranking out new modules for them all the time.
