Hope you have a great time in Italy it is an incredible place! There is so much to see and do.

Have been to Rome but not Venice.

There is a friendly bar in Rome... the Drunken Ship...happy hours, free local cuisine, good music, etc

Just remember to check what time things open before you plan your day, there are werid opening hours during the Winter months.
