SAN DIEGO -- A Pacific storm that came ashore in Oceanside turned into a tornado Saturday when it reached Fallbrook.
The twister knocked down trees and tore off roof tiles, authorities said.
The tornado struck at about 9:15 a.m. in the 2900 block of Los Alisos Drive in Fallbrook and was spawned from a thunderstorm, that came ashore in Oceanside. It gathered momentum as it headed northeast, National Weather Service Meteorologist Philip Gonsalves said.
An hour later, a tornado was reported on Rainbow Valley Road, near the Riverside County line. Buildings were damaged and powerlines were knocked down, Gonsalves said.
A tornado was also reported in Temecula, where there were reports of animals injured, Gonsalves said.
Almost 400 lost power due to the tornando, San Diego Gas & Electric spokesperson Anne Silva said.
Power had been restored to all but 130 customers by 1:30 p.m. she said.
