Actually the USA forcibly removed every citizen from Diego Garcia, not that they'd ever tell you that on the conditioning they tell you is news. I used that example because of the joke, which was in fact, quite funny. If you can't figure out in which countries the United States has an unwanted military presence, or controls through a friendly dictator they installed, that's your problem. Saying America isn't an empire is a statement so ridiculous it doesn't merit a discussion. Why do you think America at least attempts to over-through any elected leader who doesn't conform to their policies? Hugo Chavez and Jean-Bertrand Aristide are the two most recent examples, but there are many many more. This isn't Bush bashing, this is Wilsonian idealism and has been US policy for the better part of this century. It's not hard to understand these things once you remove from your head your childlike adoration for your country, and instant defense of any crimes it commits.
