Mapping directions from one point to another isn't easy - personally, I only use mapping sites to aid me in mapping my own route.
Distance alone isn't a good indicator - often times a longer route may still be faster.
The travelling salesperson problem is one that even the most powerful computers have a difficult time with, especially when numerous variables are added, such as the type of road, speed limits, traffic, etc.
Folks who rely on computer mapping alone do so at their peril - I've met so many folks who have gotten lost, been late, etc because they blindly relied on MapQuest, etc.
