Fame could mean notoriety and/or infamy. Imagine being Newton. He's famous to this day for his accomplishments in physics although I don't think he was a rich man. He changed the course of history and helped humankind advance. Most of the the rich men that lived when he was alive are not known today.

Timothy McVeigh will be known for decades to come. He will be infamous in the textbooks because of what he did. We can argue he was crazy, misguided, or that he stood up for his beliefs. Whatever we believe about him, he will be talked about and remain 'famous'.
