Using the mean is actually a lot more useful than using the average in this case. Averages are much more misleading. You can have 100's of guys making pennies and one guy making millions and the average would look like $20. When in reality most are making pennies.

I think you have arthematic mean (average) mixed up with median (midpoint of a sample).
Which is probably why you're in porn, and not an statistician I guess.
I agree with your basic point though, a median sample would be much more informative. However, I suspect that the median in many of these cases would be lower than the average... you know that there are some doctors out there that are making waaaaaaaaaay above average pay, and would pull the average up. Ideally, if they could give median, mean, and 5%/95% values for the curve, you could get a near perfect idea of what a particular profession can yield.
