Even minor procedures can go drastically wrong when it comes to the back. It's easy to be hesitant. Doctor's don't even like to suggest surgery for the back unless it's absolutely neccessary.
That being said... they are getting better with it. It's just one of those things that will continue to progress with the more they know. Doctor's didn't even like going near the heart at one point but now they do bypasses and put in pace makers and do all kinds of stuff in there all the time.
