:tongue 'Deep Throat' Film Probes Its Popularity

NEW YORK - Film producer Brian Grazer says he first heard about the 1972 pornographic film "Deep Throat" when his 60-year-old grandmother went to see it.

Grazer, whose credits include "Splash," "Apollo 13" and "A Beautiful Mind," said he made the new documentary "Inside Deep Throat" to examine why his grandmother was drawn to the 70s film.

"She went because it had been talked about so much by Johnny Carson (news) and Bob Hope," Grazer told the Daily News for a story in Sunday's editions.

"The references were so pervasive in our culture" at the time, he said. "She wanted to know what all the noise was about. And so she and my grandfather stood in line in West Hollywood during the daytime and saw this porn flick. It stuck in my mind."

The film, which opens Friday, examines the making of the movie, the era in which it was made, First Amendment issues it raises and the effect it had on pop culture.

The documentary also includes interviews with leading man Harry Reems (now a real estate developer), writers Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal and Erica Jong and Hustler magazine mogul Larry Flynt.

"I guess this film is about how our cultural zeitgeist works," Grazer said.
