They said it's the mean value. If that is true exactly half make above what's listed and exactly half make below what's listed in each of the professions listed.
Using the mean is actually a lot more useful than using the average in this case. Averages are much more misleading. You can have 100's of guys making pennies and one guy making millions and the average would look like $20. When in reality most are making pennies.
