You CAN use a gun, tell him to drop his weapon and if he gets within striking distance you can shoot him after you have told him to drop his weapon/stay back or I will shoot. The man has a deadly weapon; you are allowed to protect yourself from a deadly attack. The same goes for a knife or a vehicle.
