Well to truly enjoy Costa Rica, I would say tour the country, go from beach to beach until you make your way around....the more you see the more you should enjoy it
For dealing with people, depending on the area it's not recommended to carry valuables or laptops around...that should go without saying though. If you can pickup (or already know) some Spanish, that will be a massive asset...if not it's very easy to learn though, I didn't know it before moving here and know am quite fluent.
