my bad thought it was a regular postal scale not a double sided scale.

The answer is 3 tries. Heres how you do it.

1st try: take 8 coins and put 4 on each side. If it balances out even you did it in one shot, the ninth coin is the counterfit. If not.

2nd try: Take the 4 coins on the heavier side and divide them up 2 on each side.

3rd try: take the 2 coins on the heavier side and put 1 on each side. The heavier one is counterfit.
