Marketing is still very primitive in this business: we rely almost entirely on tits and ass to sell for us and make very little effort to identify or cater for the more subtle buttons we could be pressing. But if we perform poorly in getting the most out of surfers, we handle affiliates much worse. By and large they are not even recognized as customers.

The reason is that most sponsors are not really interested in small traffic sources. Some may say otherwise, but the reality is that this business is littered with preferential rates for the most successful affiliates and incentives beyond the reach of Joe Average. The "ordinary" affiliate is basically offered some tired banners and overexposed galleries and left to get on with it. This certainly makes for an easy life for the sponsors and those with a high enough profile succeed in spite of it. But if only because of the sheer number of small fry, there are a lot of sponsors who could benefit from a more positive attitude towards them.

If all of that is too abstract, sponsors who don't want lots of inactive signups could simply place their program details, promo materials, etc, out in the open instead of on the other side of a signup form...
