I don't recall ever returning any software to a store so you are probably correct, although store policy does not always mean that you won't get a refund. With most businesses, it has been my experience that, customer relations are more important to the business then policies, which are not written in stone.
I did return a open box of fifty floppies to Walmart. After trying about a half dozen floppies and finding them to be corrupt, I returned them. Walmart wanted to do an exchange for another box of floppies of the same brand, but I declined, so my money was returned.
