In the main, the media should not be censored.

However, in times of war there does need to be some censorship.
I'm talking, of course, about the staged-for-the-cameras car bombings and the news-from-the-point-of-view-of-the-terrorists in Iraq.

It would have been unthinkable in WW2 for the media to try and legitimise what the enemy were doing.

And look what happened in Vietnam. The USA was not defeated by the Communist enemy - it was defeated from within by it's own media and the effect of that media on the population.
