From what is known of Rice prior to any politics, she is a very bright person and highly qualified.
Since being an advisor to the President - frankly I don't see what she has done. She was given, in an off-the-cuff remark by Bush, the job of creating some relationship between Israel and Palestine and undertook to visit often and establish some plan. That resulted in one visit and the talk ended.
Other than that she has spewed the words of the Whitehouse, lies, slants and the rest and sees nothing wrong with this - at least from the hearing.
It is hard to trust a person who participated and promoted the level of screwups (whether by design or not), that occurred over the last few years.
She was also the person who said prior to this Admin taking any office... and this is not out of context, "US soldiers are trained to kill and that's what they should be doing."
There are more occasions where she was in the oil biz and clearly in the pockets of others and these were of a political nature, tho she was not in politics at that time.
Overall, in a new position.. she is supposed to represent the US and relate both US policy to other nations and create relationships covering many subjects. Frankly, I think she may already be "contaminated" and even with good intentions and her ability, I doubt others would trust her or be willing to deal with her. She has never shown - at least so far - any ability to encompass the wide range of scenarios which may be presented to a Secretary of State.
But... she has many excellent qualities, but perhaps "politics" is not one.
