There's a reason you're told not to hide in a grove of trees or under a tree: Lightning can and will strike anything anywhere, tallest or not. Research shows, however, that lightning will primarily strike a single object in the middle of other objects.
Example: Heard about the kid who gets strck by lightning as he's on the football field? The stands, buildings, etc. that RING the field are lots taller, but since the field itself is an open space in the middle of that ring, whatever's standing inside it will be what's struck.
Hence: Don't stand in a grove of trees. There's always an open space in that grove, and if you're in it, you're what's going to be hit.
The picutre isn't fake, btw. The fellow who took it was in Florida, (I think, can't remember), and got lucky enough to catch this beautiful shot.
