A significant % of priests have always been that way. Most I'm sure are not but it's certainly not a new thing. We just get to hear about it these days is the biggest difference.
The church in the UK came under attack revently for hushing up child molestation in the past. They may not all be perverts but they are nearly all hypocritical bastards.
