Sydney

In North Shore, the Jewish community is more spread out than in Bondi, and there is no concentrated Jewish shopping area. Nonetheless, there are many sights to be seen. The North Shore synagogue is situated on several acres of tropical lawn; the weekly kiddush following Sabbath services are referred to as a "garden party." The suburb also features a Jewish theater, other cultural activities, and miles of gorgeous beaches.

"Australia remains to this day the only country in the world, other than Israel, whose founding members included Jews. As a result, Jews were treated as equal citizens from the outset. In contrast to contemporary Europe, incidents of anti-Semitism were very rare in Australia. Jews were free to participate in economic and cultural life, and played an important role in their development. The first Australian theater, for example, was built by a Jew, and an early Jewish composer, Isaac Nathan, has been described as the "father of Australian music." "

"Where Jews Hang Out in Sydney

Bondi Beach
Long before there was Olympic Beach volleyball, Bondi has been a mecca for Jews, Poms and Israelis with its combination of beach and trendy culture. The sand and surf are world renowned, as are the topless bathers. Some great pubs dot the suburb, notably the Bondi Hotel and the Pavillion, both popular with the Jewish crowd (depending what night and season!). For those inclined to the cafe culture, Speedos and Skinny Dip serve great coffee and hearty meals. For those looking for pokies and a traditional Jewish meal, the Hakoah Club is for you - although you must have ID - you have to be over 60 to get in!

The Sheaf, Double Bay
The back area of The Sheaf is particularly popular with Sydney's private school graduates. The central location and great beer garden seem to be the main attractions for the Jewish crowd. Chilled ambience and plenty of pool tables make the Sheaf a pretty relaxed option. If you're the kind of guy who likes to spend an evening nursing a solitary beer while making poor attempts at flirting, then the Sheaf is for you! Try the Soda Bar upstairs for something a little more classy."

i used to work near the sheaf.. its a fucking great pub...
