You have a point. I wouldn't say Prince deserves legendary status. So in that sense he may be overrated. I see him only as a very talented musician and original artist. Aside from his own music, he has also written and from what I understand composed many songs for other artists that went on to become huge hits.
I don't hear his influence in much of today's music and I think the direction of music probably has something to do with it. Prince has more or less rejected hip-hop and he wasn't a precursor to the "alternative" music that Nirvana played. Both hip-hop and alternative rock are what dominate the music scene today so it may not be surprising that we don't hear his influence. I think he's loved because he consistently created original music and he has been pretty prolific (in other words, far from a one hit wonder)
The only person I can think of that has had any profound effect on music since Elvis is Bob Marley. You can hear his influence in all forms of music today including hip-hop, rock, punk, "alternative". He sells more albums than the Beatles, Zeppelin, and all the other heavy hitters each year. And in every far reach of the globe the name Bob Marley is recognizable.
