Explosions rock Trois-Rivieres

TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. (CP) - A series of explosions and fires created an inferno that destroyed at least seven buildings, including a pizzeria, and injured five people early Friday.
One person was missing, said firefighter Michel Letarte. The fire appears to have begun in the pizzeria after 3 a.m., apparently due to a natural gas leak, triggering multiple explosions, he said. Several houses also were destroyed.
Three of the injured people were in serious condition and were taken to a hospital burn unit in Quebec City.
At least 30 surrounding residences were evacuated due to the intense fire.
About 150 firefighters fought the blaze, which television footage showed sending huge fireballs into the sky.
A spokeswoman for Gaz Metropolitan said natural gas was found leaking in underground aqueducts.
"We don't know the reason for the gas in the aqueducts," said Stephanie Trudeau.
Trois-Rivieres is about halfway between Montreal and Quebec City.
