How much does an affiliate design play into you promoting their sites?

Here's my situation... I'm getting ready to launch a new affiliate program. The sites are designed, being beta tested and converting well... but I don't have the affiliate program design built yet.

Now, while the majority of affiliate sites show a lot of fast cars, stacks of money and gold bars... that's just not the image I'm going after. I'm looking for a more subtle... kinda "speak-easy" approach. And honestly, the type of webmasters I'm gearing this towards aren't impressed by shiny objects on web sites.

So basically, would a simplistic design... like a nastydollars, detract you from trying a new program. Keep in mind, we'd have the tools you want like hosted galleries, downloadable content, banners and full page ads but it would be served up in a more raw style.

I'm curious to get some feedback on this because honestly... I've been on both sides on the fence and I'm currently taking on more affiliates with a plain white page with my icq # then I did with a $1500 flash design.

I know how I feel on the issue, but I'm curious to know how the majority of webmasters feel.

Any opinions on this are greatly appreciated.
