In the late summer of 2001 my ex and I started a TGP when everyone said you couldn't build a new successful TGP. "Everyone" still says that by the way. It used submitted galleries (before there were such things as FHGs) plus a few our own. No additional revenue from paid spots, partner accounts, banners etc. We concentrated on having good ads on our site, text, designed some of our banners etc. managed our trades HOURLY.

Within 3-4 months we were doing 50k in traffic (almost ALL non-search engine traffic) and making 4k-5k a month. Almost all that revenue was from the advertising we did on the TGP ourselves. If we put an ad up and it wasn't getting the clicks and/or wasn't making reasonable sales over a couple days, the ad came down and a new one went up.

If you market to your traffic, give the traffic what it wants and needs in order to entice it to buy, you can make a lot of money. If you don't have a clue how to do what, then that same 50k TGP might make 1k a month.

There are no black and white answers. You need to figure out how YOU can make the most money from YOUR traffic sources.
